April + May Newsletter

Welcome to the Polyglossos April and May newsletter. Every month, I will talk about things happening in my life that are related to Classics learning and some advice for beginners, along with some extra snippets that didn't fit on my Instagram posts this month.

For these two months, I'm going to do a special edition newsletter focusing on the papacy.

After the passing of Pope Francis on April 21st, the Vatican held the "conclave" to select the new pope. After 4 rounds of voting, American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was selected, and chose the papal name Leo XIV.

Habemus Papam

You have likely heard the announcement of the new pope by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, but what does it the whole message mean? Let's break it down sentence by sentence.

Here are the words of the announcement.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum;

habemus papam:

Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum,

Dominum Robertum Franciscum,

Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Prevost,

Qui sibi nomen imposuit Leonem decimumquartum.

Which means:

I announce to you all with great joy,

we have a pope:

The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord,

Lord Robert Francis

Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Prevost,

Who has taken to himself the name Leo the Fourteenth.

The Pope's Motto

Pope Leo XIV's motto is "In illo Uno unum", which translates to "In the One, we are one." The phrase is taken from a sermon by Saint Augustine on Psalm 127, which he explained as "Although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one." The Pope is under the Order of Saint Augustine, which explains the reason he chose this motto. He also mentioned that "it is important to promote communion in the Church."

Additional Information

Something worth a watch is a interview with the pope, then Cardinal Prevost, in 2012, where he spoke about evangelization in the modern age with social media.
